Twin sisters celebrate 101st birthday saying secret to long life is 'not sitting still too long'

Amid all the New Year's Day celebrations, twin sisters Betty Richards and Jenny Pelmore will have a particularly special reason to enjoy the occasion.

The sprightly pair, Britain's oldest known twins, who have lived through five royal reigns, will be marking their 101st birthdays.

The sisters were born half an hour apart on Jan 1, 1908, the year Henry Ford produced his first Model T car. The doctor who delivered them in Manchester arrived on horseback.

They still live a short drive from each other in Cornwall and they say the secret to longevity is "not sitting still for too long".

At the age of 97, the twins began attending night classes to learn Spanish, and last year they visited Budapest to celebrate their centenaries.

Mrs Pelmore, from Feock, near Truro, said: "We are still in very good health and keep mobile. We are also together, which is the main thing.

"We have always been active and intend to remain so. Having a busy life and not sitting still for too long is the key."

Mrs Richards added: "The secret is to stay healthy. Just keep smiling and keep going."

The sisters were both married but are now widows. Mrs Richards, who was a kindergarten teacher, and later became a beekeeper, has two grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Mrs Pelmore was a secretary and became an accomplished painter later in life.

The twins are due to celebrate their birthdays with family and friends and plan a party later this month.

Mrs Pelmore said: "We always celebrate every year. We had champagne on our 21st birthday and we hated it.

"I like a gin with plenty of tonic water. Betty likes her brandy and ginger."

IDENTICAL twins Betty Richards and Jenny Pelmore have double reason to celebrate today – it's their 100th birthday.

The sprightly pair were born on New Year's Day 1908 – the year Henry Ford produced his first Model T car.

King Edward VII was on the throne – one of five monarchs whose reigns they have seen.

Betty and Jenny still live near each other and plan to mark their century with a holiday in Budapest, Hungary.

Jenny said: "We never think about our age much – it's other people that make the fuss."

Betty added: "Life is much faster now but the only thing I don't understand is computers."

The sisters were born in Manchester in a different age – the doctor arrived on horseback to deliver them.

And their brother William was more excited about being allowed to hold the horse.

Betty said: "I remember seeing two small planes in World War One. I ran in screaming and got under the table." Later the family lived in Kent.

Betty was a secretary and Jenny a nursery teacher.

Betty married Brandon Richards in 1936 and had children Peter and Gina.

She now has two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Jenny met her husband Hugh Pelmore in 1940 and they married in 1947.

Hugh was a World War Two RAF pilot who raced Bentley cars.

Both sisters are now widowed and live in Feock, near Truro, Cornwall.

They still enjoy a tipple – gin and Dubonnet for Jenny and brandy and ginger for Betty.

But there will be no champagne today.

The girls tried it on their 21st birthday and hated it.

Asked the secret of a long life, Jenny said: "Keep smiling and keep going."

Betty joked: "And keep breathing."

JENNY and Betty may be Britain's oldest twins.

Previously the oldest known were Ivy Shermer and Olive Tucker. The pair, from the North East, were 98 in May.

Rahasia Si Kembar Hidup Sehat 101 Tahun

(ANTARA News) - Sepasang kembar merayakan ulang tahun ke-101 di Inggris pada 1 Januari 2009.

Seperti dilaporkan situs Telegraph, dua nenek tersebut membuka rahasia hidup panjang mereka adalah "jangan terlalu lama 'bengong'".

Betty Richards dan Jenny Pelmore lahir berselang setengah jam di Manchester pada 1 Januari 1908, tahun yang sama dengan Henry Ford mencipakan mobil Ford Model T.

Dua nenek lincah itu adalah kembar tertua di Inggris dan dokter yang membantu kelahiran mereka ketika itu tiba dengan menunggang kuda.

Mereka masih hidup berdekatan di Cornwall.Pada usia 97, dua nenek itu mulai ikut les bahasa Spanyol dan tahun lalu melancong ke Budapest untuk merayakan satu abad kelahiran mereka.

Mrs Pelmore, dari Feock, dekat Truro berkata: "Kami masih sangat sehat dan terus bergerak. Kami tetap bersama-sama, inilah yang utama."

"Kami selalu sibuk dan ingin tetap sibuk. Hidup banyak kesibukan dan tidak terlalu banyak bengong adalah kuncinya."

Mrs Richards menambahkan: "Rahasianya adalah tetap sehat. Tetaplah tersenyum dan teruskan hidup."

Dua nenek itu pernah menikah dan kini keduanya janda. Mrs Richards dulunya adalah guru TK kemudian menjadi peternak madu. Dia punya dua cucu dan dua cicit.

Mrs Pelmore adalah sekretaris lalu menjadi pelukis.(*)
